Overview
The goal of this course is to educate clinical lab professionals in the acute care setting on the basics of mycology.Goals and Learning Outcomes
Competency in laboratory mycology begins with proper specimen collection followed by skilled processing of samples and accurate culture identification. Safely and rapidly identifying pathogenic fungi is key for administering the correct treatment for patients with fungal infections. This course will provide an overview of mycology utilizing images to show learners the different hyphae, reproduction, and morphology of various fungi. It will also review safety precautions to prevent occupational hazards within the mycology lab. The goal of this course is to educate clinical lab professionals in the acute care setting on the basics of mycology.
- Recall basic mycology terminology, fungi behaviors, and the types of mycoses.
- Recognize the reproduction and colony morphology of fungi to aid in their identification.
- Indicate safety precautions that should be used in the mycology laboratory.
