Goal and Learning Outcomes
The goal of this continuing education program is to update nurses’ clinical knowledge about how to prevent and handle mechanical complications associated with long-term feeding tubes. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
- List common complications associated with long-term feeding tubes
- Plan strategies to prevent mechanical complications
- Describe nursing interventions to resolve mechanical complications
Because misconnections of feeding tubes can and have caused patient injuries and deaths, there is a national and international patient safety initiative to standardize ISO tubing connectors. Implementation of new standardized feeding equipment (e.g feeding tubes, feeding administration sets, enteral syringes, etc.) will mean changes for nurses administering enteral feedings. Some of these changes will be addressed in the upcoming revised version of this educational activity. Depending on where you practice, you may have begun to see this new equipment. Information on the initiative can be found at http://stayconnected.org
In support of improving patient care, OnCourse Learning is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
