Goals and Learning Outcomes

Stroke affects many people’s lives in many ways. To improve the outcomes of patients, nurses should understand the management of patients with stroke, including pathophysiology, treatment options, potential complications, and rehabilitation after a stroke. A knowledgeable nurse can empower patients and their families to be proactive throughout the stroke recovery process. Research and technological advances have led to changes in stroke management and are addressed in this activity.


After taking this course, you should be able to:

  • Summarize the nursing role in the initial treatment of ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke.
  • Describe the nursing role in the care of patients with stroke in the acute care setting.
  • Discuss principles and strategies used in stroke rehabilitation.
  • State strategies used in the rehabilitation of patients with mobility and self-care deficits after a stroke.
  • Identify strategies in the rehabilitation of patients with cognitive, sensory, and perceptual deficits after stroke.
