Goal and Learning Outcomes

The goal of this pediatric dysphagia continuing education module for speech-language pathologists, nurses and occupational therapists is to provide experienced and new clinicians with an enhanced ability to assess and treat feeding difficulties with pediatric populations and to assist the nurses who care for these children to implement feeding plans effectively. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Define and discuss the components of a “look and listen” approach for pediatric dysphagia assessment and treatment
  • Identify barriers to oral feedings in pediatric populations diagnosed with dysphagia and/or feeding difficulties, and suggest supportive feeding modalities for the nurses who provide direct care to pediatric patients
  • Describe outcomes of a “look and listen” approach that will enhance the quality of feedings between the child and caregiver
