Goal and Learning Outcomes

The goal of this mandated training is to provide information related to the infection control and barrier precautions education requirements, ensure healthcare professionals understand and minimize the opportunity for bloodborne pathogen transmission, provide current scientifically accepted infection prevention and control practices, and discuss the disciplinary actions for not complying with the law. After taking this course, you should be able to:
  • State the legal requirements for the education of infection prevention and control practices for healthcare providers in NY State.
  • Identify responsibilities related to infection prevention and control practices, and the consequences of failing to comply.
  • Discuss the mechanisms of disease transmission and factors that influence the outcome of exposure.
  • Describe engineering controls, safe injection practices, and work practice controls.
  • Summarize strategies for preventing pathogen transmission of HIV, HBV, and HCV.
  • Explain the circumstances that require the use of barriers and PPE.
  • Differentiate the correct use and strategies for cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization.
  • Describe occupational health strategies in protecting healthcare workers and patients.
  • Discuss the basics of sepsis and related evaluation and management strategies.
