Goals and Learning Outcomes

Well into the 21st century, nursing is experiencing a pivotal moment. A key message of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and Institute of Medicine (IOM)’s 2008 initiative to transform the nursing profession report, “The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health,” is the recommendation that nurses fully partner with physicians and other healthcare professionals to redesign the country’s healthcare system (IOM, 2008). Now, more than ever, nursing needs effective leaders to guide us into the future. 

You may not have set out to become a nurse leader when you enrolled in nursing school. You may even be intimidated by the thought of it. However, providing excellent patient care extends beyond clinical skills. Your leadership can help improve patient care and shape the future of the profession.
