HIV Care and Support: Best Practices for Creating a Welcoming and Inclusive Clinic Environment

Despite significant progress in the treatment and prevention of HIV, stigma remains highly prevalent in rural and underserved communities. Effective counseling and communication have been shown to increase patient engagement, improve adherence to antiretroviral therapy and prevention methods, and reduce stigma. However, members of the multidisciplinary care team (including both clinical and nonclinical staff) may not be aware of best practices when engaging with patients living with HIV, starting the moment they enter the clinic seeking care. In this activity, expert faculty will lead participants through two realistic scenarios—one that creates stigma for patients and another that reduces it. Strategies to create an inclusive, welcoming environment to increase patient retention in care will also be reviewed.
