Goal and Learning Outcomes

The goal of this continuing education program is to give dietitians, dietary managers, school nutritionists, EMTs and paramedics, fitness professionals, health educators, nurses, and physicians an overview of the benefits of dietary folate and folic acid supplementation in the prevention of neural tube defects and other health problems. The content in this course is applicable to dietitians, certified dietary managers, school nutritionists, EMTs and paramedics, fitness professionals, health educators, nurses, and physicians. After taking this course, you should be able to:
  • Define neural tube defects and their effects.
  • Describe three or more ways to increase the serum folate level in women of childbearing age.
  • Identify at least four health problems that are reduced by adequate folate intake.
