Goals and Learning Outcomes

The financial changes that have beset the healthcare system have been the subject of countless publications. Hospital supply chains are continuing to mature at a rapid pace to reduce costs and increase operational efficiencies to combat consistently eroding margins. Nursing leaders need to understand how supply arrives at its point of care and the associated financial impacts. Nursing leadership needs to be aware of the impact of group purchasing organizations (GPOs) and distributors in product selections and the role these organizations play in helping hospitals reduce their supply chain costs.

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  • Identify the different pathways for supplies to arrive at the point of care and the financial implications of each.
  • Recognize supply sourcing and the impact both group purchasing organizations (GPOs) and distributors have in product selection.
  • Indicate the use and financial implications of value analysis committees and the total cost of ownership for supplies for your healthcare entity.
