Goals and Learning Outcomes

Evidence-based practice allows nurses to use credible research to improve patient outcomes. By providing care in accordance with these practices, patients receive the best management and treatment options available. This learning activity reviews the evidence behind three initiatives: Spontaneous breathing and awakening trials for patients requiring mechanical ventilation, prevention of central line-associated blood stream infections (CLABSIs), and the importance of early initiation of enteral nutrition in the critically ill patient population to reduce the risk of malnutrition. The goal of this course is to provide evidence-based recommendations regarding sedation management, central line-associated blood stream infections (CLABSIs), and early enteral feeding to prevent malnutrition.

The goal of this course is to provide evidence-based recommendations to nursing professionals in acute care settings regarding sedation management, central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs), and early enteral feeding to prevent malnutrition.


After taking this course, you should be able to:

  • Describe “sedation vacation” protocols for mechanically ventilated ICU patients
  • State the nurseÂ’s role in decreasing CLABSIs
  • Discuss current recommendations for early initiation of enteral feedings in critically ill patients
  • Describe the nurse’s role during a spontaneous awakening and spontaneous breathing trial in the mechanically ventilated, critically ill patient population.
  • Identify the nurse’s role in decreasing the risk of central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs).
  • Discuss at least three characteristics of malnutrition and current recommendations for early initiation of enteral feedings in critically ill patients.
