Goals and Learning Outcomes

After a devastating earthquake in 2010, a subsequent cholera epidemic, and the aftermath of hurricane Matthew in 2016, caring for people from Haiti presented clinicians with numerous healthcare-delivery challenges. Cultural, religious, and health beliefs affect how people from Haiti seek care for health concerns and interact with clinicians. This course highlights unique aspects of Haitian culture and traditions that influence healthcare delivery and culturally competent care for this population.

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  • Name two significant Haitian traditional health-related practices or beliefs
  • Explain three communication strategies useful when caring for patients who are Haitian
  • Describe three actions that are consistent with Haitian traditions and beliefs
  • Recognize traditional Haitian cultural concepts and practices.
  • Describe traditional Haitian healthcare practices.
  • Recall barriers to healthcare and health teaching considerations for Haitians.
