Goal and Learning Outcomes

The goal of this continuing education course is to enhance nurses’ ability to administer thrombolytic agents and care for patients who have suffered an ischemic brain attack. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Explain how thrombolytic agents work.
  • List the inclusion and exclusion criteria for administration of IV alteplase (tissue plasminogen activator, recombinant; rtPA [Activase®]).
  • Explain the nursing care of a patient receiving IV rtPA or other treatment options following an ischemic stroke.
