Goal and Learning Outcomes

The goal of this continuing education program is to enhance the ability of nurses, dietitians, health educators, physicians and physical therapists to care for patients with varying amounts of body fat who are at risk for metabolic syndrome. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Differentiate the key proteins and hormones secreted by fat cells.
  • Identify at least three chronic diseases/disorders affected by altered states of fat regulation.
  • Explain why waist circumference is a better measure of healthy weight than body mass index alone.
  • Develop a nutrition prescription for the prevention and treatment of metabolic syndrome.
