Goals and Learning Outcomes

Mechanical ventilation is an essential tool to provide support for patients who cannot adequately ventilate on their own. Each member of the interprofessional team should be well-educated in ventilator management and should understand the weaning process. Patients who require mechanical ventilation for long periods of time are at an increased risk to develop complications such as prolonged ICU stay and even death. As soon as a patient is placed on mechanical ventilation, the planning for ventilator weaning starts. As patients improve and require less support, the ventilator weaning process can begin.

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  • Describe current modes and ventilator settings.
  • Discuss the nursing care of mechanically ventilated patients.
  • Discuss methods of ventilator weaning to ensure safe patient outcomes.
  • Identify common modes and ventilator settings.
  • Recognize the assessments and interventions provided by nurses and respiratory therapists in mechanically ventilated patients.
