      Discuss a minimum of 3 clinical considerations for the obese patient undergoing bariatric surgery
      Describe characteristics of an individualized plan of care and patient care protocols to identify the essential components needed to provide sensitive patient care

    1. The goal of this review course is to help learners prepare for the Bariatric Nursing Certification (CBN) Examination. After studying the information presented here, the learner will be able to:

  • Bariatric Surgery: Post Hospitalization

    1. The goal of this module is to provide nurses preparing for the CBN exam with the necessary information about the post hospital phase. This module will include discussion about healthy behaviors, the importance of support groups, follow up, secondary effects of surgery, non-compliance issues, comorbid conditions of obesity, and quality of life changes for the postoperative patient. On completion of this module, the learner will be able to:
      Identify healthy behaviors necessary for the postoperative weight-loss surgery (WLS) patient to be successful.
      Discuss the secondary effects of surgery and assist the postoperative patient in taking appropriate actions.
      Review issues of non-compliance in the postoperative WLS surgery patient and offer strategies to improve outcomes.

    1. The goal of this module is to provide nurses preparing for the CBN exam with the necessary information about the preoperative process, coordination of referrals, ongoing patient education required to manage special populations, patient responsibilities, and assessment of knowledge deficits as they pertain to the bariatric population. On completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
      Discuss the principles of weight loss.
      Identify special needs populations and describe the unique management of obesity in adolescent, pregnant, and elder patients.
      Review strategies to promote patient readiness for bariatric surgery.

  • Bariatric Surgery: Preoperative Tasks

    1. The goal of this module is to provide nurses preparing for the CBN exam with the necessary information about various preoperative tasks, education about bariatric surgery, surgical options, and psychological considerations as they relate to the bariatric patient population. On completion of this module, the learner will be able to:
      Identify at least 3 bariatric surgical options and provide a brief review of the history of bariatric surgery.
      Recognize psychological factors that are considered "red flags " in the preoperative bariatric patient.
      Discuss patient education and preoperative process that are critical to postoperative success.

  • Bariatric Surgery: Short and Long-Term Complications

    1. The goal of this module is to provide bariatric nurses who are preparing for the Certified Bariatric Nurse (CBN) exam with the necessary information regarding short and long-term complications unique to bariatric surgery. On completion of this module, the learner will be able to:
      Identify 3 specific long term complications associated with weight loss surgery.
      Discuss critical signs and symptoms in short, intermediate, and long term postoperative phases.
      Review nursing interventions, advise postoperative patients of appropriate actions, and avoid emergent situations.

  • Clinical Management of Obesity

    1. The goal of this review course is to help learners prepare for the Bariatric Nursing Certification (CBN) Examination. After studying the information presented here, the learner will be able to:
      Identify some key genetic factors that play a role in obesity.
      Name 3 environmental factors that contribute to obesity.
      List at least 3 of the neurochemicals that influence appetite.
      Define metabolic syndrome and the part it plays in obesity.
