Autoimmune diseases are a group of more than 80 disorders in which one’s adaptive immune system attacks itself (Medline Plus, 2022). Autoimmune diseases can be localized or systemic and are the third most prominent group of disorders with varying etiologies (Angum et al., 2020; Desai & Brinton, 2019). Females are twice as likely to experience an autoimmune disorder when compared to males (Angum et al., 2020). This educational activity will focus on rheumatic autoimmune diseases (i.e., affecting the joints, muscles, or fibrous tissue) as this is the most prevalent autoimmune specialty. Other common autoimmune diseases and some rare disorders treated by other specialists will also be discussed.
The goal of this course is to provide nurses, health educators, dietitians, and occupational therapists with an introduction to autoimmune disease causes, treatment, and overall management.
