Goal and Learning Outcomes

Delegation is a very important means for accurately, efficiently, and safely providing patient care. It is a skill, an art, and a responsibility. When delegation is performed well, it makes a positive impact on patient care and team building. When performed poorly, problems can arise. Concepts of teamwork are a fundamental component of delegation. It is essential to achieve excellence in teamwork through shared leadership, delegation, and participatory supervision. Learn how to approach delegation in a wise and informed manner and to gain strategies for effectively delegating to team members as appropriate. Methods to help your preceptee develop delegation skills are presented in this course.

The goal of this course is to equip nurses in the ambulatory care setting with knowledge associated with the principles of delegation and the role teamwork plays in effective delegation.


After taking this course, you should be able to:

  • Develop effective delegation skills
  • List the Five Rights of Delegation
  • Identify common problems with optimal delegation and teamwork based on research and field evidence
  • Define supervision and accountability
  • Communicate effectively with assistive personnel to improve patient/family outcomes
  • Interpret the Five Rights of Delegation.
  • Identify outcomes of optimal and suboptimal delegation and teamwork.
  • Choose methods for developing others’ delegation skills.
