    1. The goal of this module is to provide nurses with information about the incidence, etiology, identification and treatment of fluid and electrolyte imbalances in the perioperative patient. On completion of this module, the learner will be able to:
      Identify the primary fluid compartments in the body
      Discuss the different types of crystalloid and colloid solutions, including uses
      Review the electrolytes that are useful in assessing fluid status, including assessment and management of each
      Discuss the importance of acid-base balance and it's effect on the perianesthesia patient

    1. The goal of this module is to provide nurses with the knowledge and skills required to maintain cardiovascular stability in the perianesthesia patient. After reviewing this module, the learner will be able to:
      Describe the components of a cardiovascular assessment in the perianesthesia patient
      Determine the appropriate nursing interventions to maintain hemodynamic stability in a patient recovering from anesthesia
      Identify the effects of general/regional anesthesia on the cardiovascular system
      Recognize cardiovascular complications in the post anesthesia patient

    1. The goal of this module is to provide nurses with information about the hormone producing and secreting glands that make up the endocrine system and regulate the activity of cells or organs including surgical procedures and perioperative considerations when providing nursing care for these patients.       Describe the anatomy and physiology of the endocrine system
      Discuss nursing considerations relating to various endocrine conditions
      Review the nursing considerations for the postoperative care of the patient with diabetes

    1. The goal of this module is to present information to prepare the post anesthesia care nurse to maintain stability of the gastro-intestinal (GI) system in the immediate post-operative period. After reviewing this module, the learner will be able to:
      Understand the physiology of PONV/PDNV
      Assess for risk factors of PONV/PDNV
      Assess and reassess for signs of PONV
      Identify potential complications of GI instability
      Review the pharmacological and non-pharmacological management of PONV/PDN

    1. The goal of this module is to provide nurses with the knowledge and skills required to maintain stability of the genitourinary and reproductive systems in perianesthesia patients. On completion of this module, the learner will be able to:

      Discuss the indications and treatment for common genitourinary/reproductive surgical procedures
      Recognize post-operative complications for the genitourinary/reproductive surgical patient
      Describe the physiologic changes associated with pregnancy and the post-operative implications

  • Postoperative Stability of the Hematologic, Immune, Opthalmological & Otorhinolaryngology Systems

    1. The goal of this module is to provide registered nurses with information about the incidence, etiology, identification and treatment of hematology and hemostasis conditions including the care of in the perioperative patient with immunosuppression, as well as the patient undergoing ophthalmic and otorhinolaryngology procedures. On completion of this module, the learner will be able to:
      Identify abnormal lab values and nursing interventions
      Discuss hematological disorders and disorders in hemostasis and nursing interventions for each
      Discuss transfusions of blood, blood component and reactions including nursing responsibilities
      Describe care on the patient with a suppressed immune system
      Identify common ophthalmic surgical procedures along with preoperative and postoperative care considerations
      Describe perioperative considerations for care of patients with ear, nose, and throat procedures

    1. The goal of this module is to present information that will prepare the post anesthesia care nurse to maintain stability of the patient's musculoskeletal system in the immediate postoperative period. After reviewing this module, the learner will be able to:
      Describe the anatomy and physiology of the musculoskeletal system
      Discuss risk factors of musculoskeletal instability
      Identify potential complications involving the musculoskeletal system
      Review signs of potential musculoskeletal complications
      Discuss the pharmacological and non-pharmacological management of musculoskeletal injuries

      Review the components of a comprehensive neurological nursing assessment of the unconscious patient
      Discuss the postoperative care of the neurosurgical patient undergoing spinal surgery and other surgical procedures

      Identify potential postoperative respiratory complications
      Discuss the pharmacological and non-pharmacological management of respiratory complications

  • Special Populations in Perianesthesia Nursing

    1. The goal of this module is to provide perianesthesia nurses preparing for the CPAN/CAPA certification with information on pediatrics, geriatrics, and obstetrics. After reviewing this module, the learner will be able to:
      Identify three pediatric airway emergencies and how to intervene
      Describe the anatomical changes that occur during pregnancy and how this affects the care during the perioperative phase
      Discuss the changes that occur with geriatrics and surgical implications

  • Standards of Care in Perianesthesia Nursing

    1. The goal of this module is to provide perianesthesia nurses with an overview of ASPAN Standards of Care, practice recommendations, staffing requirements and patient safety principles in perianesthesia care. On completion of this module, the learner will be able to:
      Discuss 2017-2018 ASPAN standards for nurse and patient safety
      Analyze the 2017-2018 perianesthesia nursing standards, practice recommendations, and interpretive statements
      Identify staffing needs and requirements
      Describe practice and institutional safety standards
