Goals and Learning Outcomes

Caring for a person with Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders, or ADRD, requires you to have a special set of skills and knowledge to provide high-quality care. In this course, you will learn what Alzheimer’s disease is, how it affects the brain and differs from normal aging, and how individuals typically progress through each stage. You will learn how to communicate effectively with people who have ADRD, manage challenging behaviors, and promote independence with activities of daily living. Finally, you will explore the impact of ADRD on the family.

As you progress through this course, it is important to remember that every person is unique. They may not have all of the symptoms or issues presented in this module. Additionally, the suggested interventions may not be effective for all people. You must always provide person-centered care that focuses on the specific, individualized needs and abilities of each individual.

The goal of this course is to educate all members of the healthcare team about caring for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders.

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  • Recognize the symptoms and behavioral effects of ADRD.
  • Apply appropriate strategies to manage the behavioral symptoms associated with ADRD.
  • Select appropriate strategies to promote independence with activities of daily living when caring for people with ADRD.
  • Identify interventions that can be used to support family members of individuals with ADRD.
