4 nursing scholarships awarded in memory of late Bayshore physician

Four Bayshore Community Hospital team members, either pursing baccalaureate distinction in nursing or interested in pursuing a nursing career, were awarded the 2011 Harry M. Poppick, MD, Memorial Scholarships in November. This year marks the 21st year the Poppick family has supported nursing at Bayshore Community Hospital in Holmdel, N.J.

The scholarships are named for Poppick, a former Keyport physician and founding member of the Bayshore Community Hospital medical staff, who was a much respected and beloved member of the hospital family.

After his death in 1990, the Poppick family established a nursing scholarship in his honor that has been awarded annually to hospital staff who are enrolled in nursing programs or interested in a nursing career.

This year’s scholarship recipients are Colleen Calvert, RN, 4 West; Donna Cassidy, RN, 4 East; Nancy Cox, RN, assistant nurse manager, 3 North/3 East; and Melissa Hill, RN, nurse manager, 4 East/4 West.

The scholarship recipients were presented with their awards during a special reception at the hospital. The ceremony began with a welcome address by Timothy J. Hogan, regional president of Bayshore Community Hospital and Riverview Medical Center, and Tony Cava, COO at Bayshore Community Hospital. The awards were presented by Linda Walsh, RN, MSN, CEN, vice president of nursing at Bayshore Community Hospital, with Stephan Poppick, son of Harry M. Poppick.

“We know the nurses at Bayshore Community Hospital are among the top in New Jersey and throughout the U.S.,” Hogan said in a news release.

“The work our nurses are doing on a daily basis makes a distinct mark in the memory of each person who walks through our doors, and it is representative of the many great things that happen at Bayshore.”
