It’s time to nominate your colleagues for a GEM Award

By Eileen Williamson, MSN, RN

Since the earliest days of our founding, Nurse.com has made it part of our company mission to publicly recognize and celebrate nursing excellence every chance we get — and that’s why we have our GEM Awards Program each year.

We believe we have something very special and unique in our nursing excellence GEM program, something that truly exemplifies Giving Excellence Meaning. Other organizations and facilities may recognize and celebrate nurses in various ways at certain times, but for us, doing so is an intrinsic part of who we are and what we do as a company. Our program underscores our strong belief that excellence exists in all areas of nursing and in nurses everywhere, and we consider it a privilege to publicly acknowledge that belief. Having done so for almost three decades now, our program today is the largest and most prestigious of its kind in the nation.

As we open our nomination period and begin our online coast-to-coast search for nurses of excellence each year, our goal is to bestow Nurse.com GEM awards on those who are identified by their nursing colleagues as being the best of the best in our profession. Our search generates hundreds of nominations that highlight stories of excellence from all practice areas and work settings. With nurse leaders serving as judges, we evaluate and score the many nominations we receive and select finalists, regional winners and ultimately national winners for excellence in leadership, management, education, volunteerism, inpatient care and community care.

Every year, we’re struck anew by the extraordinary accomplishments of nurses and by the many contributions they make. We’re awed by how worthy they are of the honor that will be theirs in being named GEM awardees. And it is our privilege each year to meet them and recognize them publicly at GEM Award events in cities around the country.

Please commit today to telling us the story of your nurse of excellence by submitting a nomination in this year’s program. To begin, just visit us online at Nurse.com/GEM and become part of a truly amazing opportunity. As we move through the different phases of the program and read what nurses from across the country tell us about their nurse colleagues, we hope your nominee will be among them.

Our nomination period opened on Jan. 1 from coast to coast, and will remain open until April 15. Finalists will be announced in the July issue of Nurse.com; regional winners will be featured in the November issue and you will learn who our national winners are early in 2017. We look forward to sharing their stories and all the excitement of our GEM events with you, and we hope you will be one of the many nurses around the nation who will be celebrating their colleagues for the true GEMs they are.
