The American Nurses Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the American Nurses Association, recently released “The American Nurse: Healing America – A Reflection Guide – The Power of You – The RN for Registered Nurses (Staff RNs and APRNs) and Nurse Leaders.”
The guide accompanies the 2014 feature documentary, “The American Nurse: Healing America,” a Carolyn Jones-directed film that explores critical healthcare issues through the eyes of nurses, available via DigiNext Films.
“The film is a must-see for all healthcare professionals,” foundation Chairwoman Joyce J. Fitzpatrick, PhD, MBA, RN, FAAN, said in the release. “This new guide advances the conversation about the nursing profession by asking film viewers to reflect on the first-hand accounts of nurses featured in the film and their commitment to healing America by transforming the way the country provides high-quality patient care.”
Study guide partners
In partnership with the foundation, nurse clinical and administrative leaders from New York-Presbyterian Hospital developed the guide. Contributors included Alice Corbett, FNP, MS, CPEN, NEA-BC; Bertha Ku, MPH, RN; Germaine C. Nelson, MSN, MBA, RN, CEN; Mary E. Quinn, MSN, RN; Deborah J. Stilgenbauer, MA, RN, NEA-BC; and Lovelyamma Varghese, MSN, FNP, RN, BC.
“We are honored to partner with the American Nurses Foundation because we believe so strongly in what they do for the profession of nursing,” Wilhelmina Manzano, MA, RN, NEA-BC, senior vice president and chief nursing executive at New York-Presbyterian Hospital and Healthcare System, said in the release. “More importantly, the film and the new reflection guide together will enrich many of the conversations about nursing and why nurses continue to inspire, make us proud, and represent the heart and soul of patient care.”
About the documentary
“The American Nurse” explores some of the biggest healthcare issues facing America — aging, war, poverty, prisons — through the work and lives of five nurses. The reflection guide, which complements the 2014 academic and the filmmakers’ guides for the film, aims to facilitate and guide group discussion about the film, inspire personal reflections while viewing the film, and engage viewers in reflection on important nursing aspects, such as caring, compassion, patient advocacy and the changing healthcare environment, according to the ANF.
“The American Nurse” documentary premiered during Nurses Week 2014 and played again in select theaters during Nurses Week 2015. The film explores how society views nurses and the challenges of healing America. The film is part of the American Nurse Project and made possible with the support of Fresenius Kabi, a global healthcare company specializing in medicines and technologies used to treat chronically and critically ill patients.
