I read the story “My adventures teaching fifth grade Family Life class” with a smile on my face (Nurse.com/Article/EOS/Fifth-Grade). When each of my sons went through grade school and later high school health class, I’d ask them if they had questions or thoughts they wanted to discuss.
I just warned them in advance to remember that their mom is a labor and delivery nurse who makes a living from people having sex (said with a smile to elicit a laugh and reduce potential anxiety about the subject), and that I — unlike their father — will therefore only use (and tolerate) the correct names for body parts and the correct terminology for physiological and sexual activities. I always thought it would be fun to be a guest speaker for career day at the high school.
Thanks, Karen Coates, for sharing your story.
