No other case combines the dilemma stated in the article “Modernized Code of Ethics addresses tough questions” , between nurse, patient and physician more than the Amanda Trujillo case in Arizona. Trujillo was defamed and wrongfully terminated. But she did not have the resources to fight. If professional organizations continue to treat these cases like hot potatoes, then we have no reason to believe this new code of ethics will result in better accountability.
I challenge the ANA to discuss wrongful termination at their upcoming ethics conference. I think the biggest issue we face is the lack of accountability of nurse managers and leadership for unethical treatment of nurses.
