Where can I find information about life care planning?

Dear Donna,

Where can I find information about life care planning? I’m looking for something different to do outside of the hospital setting.

Interest in Life Care Planning

Dear Interest in Life Care Planning,

Your best source of information is the American Association of Nurse Life Care Planners. Although certification is offered, it is not needed to get started or even to work in this specialty.

LCP is a great specialty to consider. Many nurses do this in conjunction with legal nurse consulting and case management since there is some overlap. Here’s an article that provides a good overview of what’s involved.

It is also a good idea to do some informational interviewing with nurses doing LCP work to understand more about the specialty. They can provide advice for getting started. Find them though AANLCP, doing an Internet search and by asking around. Nurses already working in the specialty will provide you with the most practical and relevant information in deciding if this specialty is for you.

Best Wishes

Donna
