William Paterson University, Wayne, N.J., recently celebrated the graduation of the school’s first DNP cohort during the May 2014 commencement.
This event also marked the first doctoral students graduating from the university as a whole. Eleven nursing graduates were awarded the DNP degree at the ceremony.
“I could not be more pleased with the dedication and commitment of our doctoral students,” said Brenda Marshall, EdD, MSN, RN, APN, NE-BC, PMHNP-BC, coordinator of the DNP program. “They represent the best of clinical nursing and the future of nursing leadership.”
The graduating class included Rachel Koshy, Toni Tortorella-Genova, Jill Guzman, Mary Anne Baudo, Vivek Agnihotri, Harriet Renee Coleman, Maria Brennan, Karen Magarelli, Sandra Thebaud Young, Sharon Puchalski and Gustavo Gonzales.
The post-masters program culminates with a doctoral practice dissertation project, according to WPU. The project concentration is selected by the student, approved by the academic practice dissertation committee and submitted as partial fulfillment of the program. Projects focus on improving health outcomes by examining client or caregiver factors.
Topics chosen by the class included Weight Scales: Do They Impact Heart Failure Hospital Recidivism?; Economic Impact of an IV Team on Central Line Associated Bloodstream Infections; The Impact of Nurse Manager Leadership Style on Unit Based Nurse Satisfaction Scores: A Descriptive Correlation Study; and Comparison of the Wii Balance Board and the BESS Tool Increasing Postural Stability in Collegiate Athletes.
“The process of initiating doctoral study within the university, as well as within the nursing department, presented many hurdles to be addressed.” said Ken Louie, PhD, RN, PMHCNS-BC, APN, CNE, FAAN, who serves as director, graduate nursing program. “Approvals from departmental committees, college committees, university committees and the board of trustees were obtained — without difficulty.” Approval was required by the New Jersey Board of Nursing and the New Jersey Commission on Higher Education. Even the library was reviewed to make sure it could support student projects at this higher academic level.
