ANA Leadership Institute offers new courses

New self-paced courses are being offered as part of the American Nurses Association Leadership Institute, with its partner Capella University, to help nurses strengthen leadership effectiveness and increase confidence, according to the American Nurses Association website.

“Our goal is to provide leadership training that combines knowledge and action,” Nancy Robert, PhD, BSN, MBA, ANA executive vice president, said in an interview with “When you look at the trends in the learning environment; you see anytime, anywhere courses. Self-paced courses provide that anytime, anywhere, on any device training that
is popular.”

The new self-paced courses, Agile Decision-Making, Moral Courage, Mentor and Coach Others, and Becoming a Transformational Leader, are grounded in an evidence-based competency model and allow students to spend as much time as needed on each course module.

Course content selection is a rigorous process, with a focus on what competencies a nurse needs to be a leader across the professional development cycle, Robert said. It includes input from two groups — the Curriculum Review Group and the Leadership Institute Advisory Council — made up of a cross-section of healthcare professionals with an in-depth understanding of the nursing community needs.

Each course consists of a 30-to-45-minute industry expert instructional video divided into 5-to-7-minute flexible segments, assigned reading and an interactive scenario-based simulation exercise solving real-world challenges, according to the website.

The courses also offer quizzes to gauge development progress, an on-the-job activity to immediately apply what’s learned in the course and a self-evaluation to assess development and provide insight on how new leadership knowledge can help shape the future of patient care.

“Our participant feedback is these courses have compelling and useful content,” Robert said.

Two additional self-paced courses are scheduled to roll out in 2015 as well, according to Robert.
