How can an RN find out more about the specialty of case management?

Dear Donna

Dear Donna:

I have worked in various specialties, mostly in the hospital, for the last 12 years. I am thinking of trying case management. How can I find out more about it?

Looking for a Change

Question:

Dear Looking for a Change:

Case management is certainly a great specialty to consider. It’s always wise to start by speaking to other nurses who are already working in the specialty. Do an information gathering interview with nurse case managers. Read the article, “The scoop on informational interviewing,” to learn how to do this (Nurse.com/Cardillo/Interviewing).

I also suggest you attend a few local chapter meetings of the Case Management Society of America, (CMSA.org), as a guest.

When there’s something you are considering doing, it makes sense to rub elbows with those already doing it. Plus, networking, also known as word of mouth, is a very effective way to find a job.

Best wishes,
Donna
