Certification through portfolio for advanced genetics nursing is available

The American Nurses Credentialing Center and the International Society of Nurses in Genetics announced in December the launch of a new certification through portfolio for advanced genetics nursing. This certification validates advanced genetics nurses’ unique knowledge and skills, according to a news release.

The ANCC certification through portfolio is an alternative assessment method for credentialing RNs in their specialty area. Nurses document their skills, knowledge, abilities and career accomplishments as part of the application and assessment process, and must meet accrediting bodies’ criteria to determine proficiency through a peer review process.

“Certification through portfolio is an excellent method for credentialing, and will greatly serve the nursing profession.” ANCC Executive Vice President and Chief Officer Linda C. Lewis, MSA, RN, NEA-BC, FACHE, said in a news release.

Eligibility requirements for seeking certification through portfolio include that nurses must have two years full-time experience as an RN; hold a graduate degree (masters, post-graduate or doctorate) in nursing; have a minimum of 1,500 practice hours in the specialty area of advanced genetics nursing in the last three years; and have completed 30 hours of continuing education in advanced genetics/genomics applicable to nursing in the last three years.

“We are honored to collaborate with ANCC in providing the portfolio credentialing option for advanced genetics nursing,” ISONG President Sheila Alexander, PhD, RN, said in the release. “ANCC board certification provides a credible means for ISONG members and all advanced genetics nurses to validate their knowledge, engage in lifelong learning, and be recognized for their passion, commitment and vital contributions.”
