Hudson Valley Hospital Center, Cortlandt Manor, N.Y., hosted its second annual Silver Lining Healthy Aging Fair at the hospital Oct. 30 with more than 20 interactive displays designed to teach seniors and their caregivers how to keep older adults active and healthy.

The event is part of the hospital’s NICHE program, which stands for Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders, a program of the Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing at New York University College of Nursing.

Founded in 1992, NICHE has evolved into a worldwide geriatric nursing program comprising 575 hospitals in more than 46 states as well as parts of Canada, according to its website.

In 2014, HVHC was one of nine hospitals in the nation to earn NICHE’s Exemplar Status, according to a news release.

In addition to the annual fair, the hospital has a group of nurses who meet regularly to discuss best practices in elder care and share this information with departments throughout the hospital, according to the release.

The NICHE program benefits the hospital and its patients by supporting improved clinical outcomes; enhanced nursing competencies; greater patient and family satisfaction; and community recognition.
