Look back

The Next Shift is a new series of stories written by experienced RNs to provide advice that can help guide the next generation of nurses. The series is presented by The Johnson & Johnson Campaign for Nursing’s Future.

When I look back on 40 years of nursing, I have happy and sad memories, but I know that I helped many people. I am proud I was there when life and death decisions had to be made and when the miracles of modern medicine surprised us all. There will be times when you feel that you just can’t do it for one more day. At these times, look back on the lives you touched, the patients who thanked you. Nursing is unlike any other profession; you become a part of your patients’ lives and they become a part of your life. You change them and they change you. Looking back I know it is all for the better. If you have the true heart of a nurse you will never be sorry you chose this profession.
