Do you have any suggestions or resources for a nurse who wants to get better at public speaking?

Question:

Dear Donna,

I have been asked to do a presentation at work for my coworkers. I am more than a little nervous. I haven’t done public speaking that often but would like to get better at it. Do you have any suggestions or resources for me?

Wants to Get Better at Public Speaking

Dear Donna replies:

Dear Wants to Get Better at Public Speaking,

Although most people are reluctant pubic speakers, once you learn some solid technique and tips from the pros and get a little experience you’ll be able to dramatically improve your ability to speak well in public. In so doing, you’ll also become a better communicator overall, boost your confidence and face one of your fears. These are all good things. Good presentation skills will enhance your professional package, not to mention your resume, and boost your credibility and visibility in your workplace, the community and through professional associations. Plus, we need more articulate spokespeople in
our profession.

Here are a few articles that with basics about making a presentation: “Learn to Speak with confidence” (www.Nurse.com/Cardillo/Learn-to-Speak-With-Confidence) and “Giving a Presentation” (www.Nurse.com/Cardillo/Giving-A-Presentation)

Seek out opportunities to speak regularly going forward. The more you speak — once you’ve learned proper technique — the more comfortable you become with it.

Best wishes,
Donna
