DAISY Spotlight: Susanna Olson

New Jersey RN who grants woman’s dying wish receives DAISY Award

Susanna Olson, RN

Susanna Olson, RN, ED, Saint Clare’s Health System, in Dover, N.J., was presented with a DAISY Award in September for her caring actions for a patient in the hospital’s ED.

According to her supervisor, who nominated her for the award, a patient had traveled from Indiana to be near her son, because she had end-stage cancer with only about two to three weeks left to live. Her son had planned to take her to Maine for lobster because it was on her bucket list to do before she died, but the woman needed to be admitted and the trip to Maine was canceled. Olson sent a volunteer to a local restaurant to pick up a lobster/clam dinner for the patient, paid for the dinner and set up the patient’s tray table like a restaurant table, according to the nominator.

“The patient was so touched and emotional and couldn’t have been happier or more appreciative,” the nominator wrote. “This was such a wonderful gesture by a nurse for a patient with only one simple wish.”
