Einstein Health Network gains Watson caring designation

Einstein Healthcare Network in Philadelphia again has earned a Watson Caring Institute Affiliate designation in recognition of its commitment to implement caring practices that transform healthcare, according to a news release.

Well-known scholar and nursing theorist Jean Watson, PhD, RN, AHN-BC, FAAN, recently visited Einstein Medical Center Philadelphia to present the honor and meet the nursing staff. Watson is former dean of the University of Colorado Denver College of Nursing and was recognized in 2013 as a Living Legend by the American Academy of Nursing for her extraordinary contributions to nursing.

Hundreds of hospitals have adopted Watson’s theory of human caring, which consists of 10 basic ideas including practicing loving kindness, developing helping-trusting-caring relationships and using creative scientific problem-solving methods for caring decision-making, according to the release.

Nurses who practice Watson’s theory have said it reminds them their primary focus is to help people feel cared for so they can heal, according to the release.
Einstein adopted Watson’s theory of human caring as its framework for the network’s nursing practice and professional model of care delivery almost a decade ago. Since then, Einstein nurses have undertaken many caring practice initiatives across various units and service lines, according to the release.

Einstein first earned the designation as a Watson Caring Institute Affiliate in 2011. It is one of 11 hospitals or health systems in the country that have earned this prestigious recognition, according to the release.
