South Miami Hospital RN wins nursing school memory competition

Leanne Felix Jewell, RN-BC, IBCLC, a nurse in the mother-baby unit at South Miami Hospital, has won Cardinal Health’s RNspire Nursing School Memory Competition, according to a news release. Jewell won a $5,000 scholarship to be donated in her honor to the accredited, nonprofit nursing school of her choice. She selected Miami Dade College Benjamin Leon School of Nursing.

Jewell said she knew she wanted to be a nurse when she was 4 years old. She’s pleased with her career choice because she gets an opportunity to help new families embark on their journey of parenting, according to the release.

The Nursing School Memory Competition launched in August and encouraged nurses to share a photo and favorite memory from nursing school on the RNspire Facebook page. The goal was to help inspire the next generation of nurses.

Jewell graduated from Jackson Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Miami in 1968, and her memory was about adapting to the conditions she faced.

“We were the reason we survived our rigorous nursing program,” she said in the release. “We were able to adapt to things like hurricanes our first two weeks in school to riots during the Republican convention our last weeks. We were escorted to graduation by the National Guard.

“What we learned helped us to work in environments of all kinds. Some went to the military. I went to private sectors. I have taught new parents, delivered their babies and supported their breast-feeding efforts. Nothing brings a bigger joy to my soul than when I am out in the community and someone brings their child, who might be almost grown, to show me how much my efforts have helped their parenting. As my spouse says, we have been all over the U.S. and more than once we have met someone I have helped.”

Jewell’s son Jason is in the nursing program at Miami Dade, but she said she chose the school to receive the scholarship because of its 50-year history of providing nursing education to the Miami community.
