On job applications, is it okay to answer “No” when it is asked if my current employer can be contacted?

Question:

Dear Donna,

On job applications, they often ask if they can contact your current employer. I don’t want my current employer to know I am looking for a job but I don’t want to sound like I’m hiding anything with the prospective new employer. Is it okay to answer “No” without disqualifying myself?

Discreet Job Seeker

Dear Donna replies:

Dear Discreet Job Seeker,

It is normal for a job applicant to not want their current employer to know they are looking, and prospective employers understand this. They ask the question anyway because some applicants have an open relationship with their supervisor, or the applicant may be relocating or have already resigned. So in answer to your question, it is perfectly acceptable to answer that question “No” without looking suspect.

Best wishes,
Donna
