Jacksonville University BSN student wins scholarship

Jacksonville University BSN student Jennifer Rivera has received a $2,425 UPS Scholarship through the Florida Independent College Fund.

A Middleburg, Fla., resident, Rivera is on active duty as a Petty Officer 2nd Class in the U.S. Navy and expects to complete her degree in 2016, according to a news release. She has aspirations of obtaining her MSN, then becoming an ARNP and going on to earn a DNP degree.

She is one of 614 applicants nationwide to earn the scholarship, which is awarded based on academic achievement and financial need.

Rivera, the oldest of four siblings, said she is especially proud to be a first-generation college student in her family. Her mother came to the U.S. in the 1980s from the Dominican Republic, helping support the family working two jobs while her husband was employed at an airport job.

“It’s an honor to receive this,” Rivera, who retires from the Navy at the end of September after seven years’ service, said in the release. “It shows that doing well and sacrificing pays off, and that others notice your hard work.

“Growing up, we had to struggle at times, using food stamps and Medicaid and hand-me-downs. When I graduated high school I realized I wanted to keep progressing. The military and then my schooling at JU are stepping stones to attaining more. Now, the sky’s the limit; all you need is desire.”

The Florida Independent College Fund is a statewide association for private colleges and universities affiliated with the Council of Independent Colleges. At the national level, CIC teams with UPS Foundation to distribute the UPS Scholarships.
