Columbia SON chooses Ferrara as associate dean

Columbia University School of Nursing, Manhattan, has hired Stephen Ferrara, RN, DNP, FAANP, FNP-BC, has been named associate dean of clinical affairs.

Ferrara will serve as assistant professor and oversee the Columbia Advanced Practice Nurse Associates, a nurse-run primary care service, according to a news release.

He comes to Columbia with a background in clinical practice, public policy and education.

Previously, he worked as a family NP at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx and as an associate adjunct professor at Pace University, where he earned his doctorate. He is executive director for the Nurse Practitioner Association of New York State, where he successfully advocated for the passage of the state’s NP Modernization Act, a law that permits experienced NPs to practice without physician supervision.

“I look forward to supporting Columbia’s commitment to advanced practice nursing and to educating the next generation of leaders in clinical care,” Ferrara said in the release. “Advanced practice nurses have more opportunities than ever before to provide comprehensive, holistic care to patients, families and communities.”
