FIU nursing school earns Jonas Center grant

The Nicole Wertheim College of Nursing & Health Sciences at Florida International University in Miami has received a $40,000 grant from the Jonas Center for Nursing and Veterans Healthcare.

Dean Ora L. Strickland, RN, PhD, FAAN, announced the gift, which will be matched in full by the college and will fund the scholarships of five doctoral nursing students in 2014, according to a news release.

“Working to improve care for our nation’s veterans is a passion shared by both the College of Nursing & Health Sciences and the Jonas Center for Nursing and Veterans Healthcare,” Strickland said in the release. “We are so pleased that five of our brightest doctoral students have been selected as
Jonas Scholars.”

The five NWCNHS Jonas Scholars join nurse educators and leaders at 110 schools supported by Jonas Center programs. Aleksandr Kaipov, RN, is a PhD student and Jonas Nurse Leader Scholar. The other four are Jonas Veteran Healthcare Scholars, with Million Mesfun, RN, and Beverly Fray, RN, in PhD programs and Philip Dlugasch, RN, and Paula Bellino, RN, in DNP programs.
