Wound, ostomy and continence RNs updating skills at conference

Members of the Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurses Society are meeting in Nashville from June 21-25 for the group’s 46th annual conference, according to a news release.

The Mount Laurel, N.J.-based WOCN Society is a professional, international nursing society of 5,000 healthcare professionals who specialize in caring for patients with wounds, ostomies and incontinence.

The conference brings wound, ostomy and continence information to one place and features a variety of sessions focused on each specialty and on all three practice areas. Attendees of all skill levels can learn from industry leaders, while developing new skills and networking with fellow WOC professionals.

“The WOCN Society’s annual conference provides attendees with the gold standard in education,” Phyllis Kupsick, RN, MSN, FNP-BC, CWOCN, the society’s president, said in the news release. “After attending conference sessions and networking with over 1,300 WOC professionals, members return to their facilities with up-to-date education in patient care and treatment.”

This year’s speakers include Michel Aboutanos, MD, MPH, FACS, who presented “Youth Gang Violence: No Lyrics for Wounds,” highlighting the increasing trend of gang violence as it relates to WOC nursing. The schedule also includes sessions reviewing healthcare reform and its effects on nurses.

“A WOC nurse serves as clinical expert, educator, consultant, researcher and administrator, and plays a pivotal role in providing optimal care for patients in various healthcare settings,” Kupsick said in the release. “[The] conference is the perfect setting for our WOC specialty nurses to continually educate themselves, engage in best practices and improve the lives of patients with wounds, ostomies and continence issues.”
