U.S. uninsured rate drops to 13.4%

The uninsured rate for U.S. adults fell to 13.4% in April and May, from 17.1% in the fourth quarter of 2013 and from the 15.6% average in the first quarter of 2014. The data are based on more than 30,000 interviews conducted as part of the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index.

Where major subgroups are concerned, the rate dropped more among blacks than it did in other major demographic groups, falling from 20.9% in the fourth quarter of 2013 to 14.7% in the second quarter of 2014, a 6.2% drop.

Hispanics had the second-largest drop across demographic groups, from 38.7% in the fourth quarter of 2013 to 33.1%, a 5.6% drop. However, Hispanics remain the highest uninsured rate across key subgroups, according to a Gallup.com article.
Young adults, age 26 to 34 years, continue to have the highest uninsured rate among all age groups, with a rate of 23.9% as of May 31, compared to adults age 18-25 years (19.1%) and adults age 35 to 64 years (13.2%).

Households that earned less than $36,000 annually had the highest uninsured rate at 24.7%, compared to households that earned between $36,000 and $89,999 annually (8.6%) and households that earned $90,000 or more annually (3.9%).

The overall 13.4% uninsured rate for U.S. adults shows a “leveling off of the uninsured rate compared with the month-by-month declines seen in previous months,” according to the Gallup.com article. Gallup research shows that the uninsured rate, on average, has dropped more in states that have elected to expand Medicaid and run their own healthcare exchanges than in states that have not, the article continued.

Results are based on telephone interviews conducted as part of the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index survey April 1-May 31, with a random sample of 30,430 adults, aged 18 and older, living in U.S. and the District of Columbia.

Interviews were conducted in Spanish for respondents who are primarily Spanish-speaking. Each sample of national adults includes a minimum quota of 50% cellphone respondents and 50% landline respondents, with additional minimum quotas by time zone within a region.
