What kind of education is needed to be a school nurse?
Prospective School Nurse
Dear Donna replies:
Dear Prospective School Nurse,
No special or additional education is needed to get your first job as a school nurse. If you ever wanted to become a certified school nurse, then some additional coursework may be necessary. But it is important to note that certification is not required in most cases to work as a school nurse.
I always recommend that you try out a specialty if possible before seeking a full-time job in it, or even getting certified in it. You can get part-time and temporary school nurse jobs through some nursing agencies. You also can look for substitute school nurse work directly through a board of education or with a public, private or special needs school.
Do some informational interviewing and find out how to make the most of this type of interview by reading the article, The scoop on informational interviewing (www.Nurse.com/Cardillo/Interviewing). Informational interviews with a few school nurses may help you decide if this is the specialty for you. Call any school nurses that you know directly or find them through local schools. You also can contact the officers of your local chapter of the National Association of School Nurses. Find your state chapter and officers by visiting (www.nasn.org).
