The University of Texas Health Services, part of the nursing schools faculty clinical practice, has about 40 contracts with business and industry to provide primary care, occupational health, travel medicine and other services, and operates its main nurse-practitioner-managed clinic. In fiscal year 2013, University of Texas Health Services reported more than 12,000 clinical visits by patients and gross revenues of more than $3.7 million.

After graduating in the state of Texas first class to hold the DNP degree, Rooney joined the UTHSC School of Nursings faculty in 2009. She received both her MSN and her BSN from UTHSC School of Nursing. Early in her career, she worked as a nurse practitioner and an RN in several Texas Medical Center hospitals.
