As an experienced RN with electronic health record implementation experience, what other career transition opportunities would you recommend?
Seeking Career Transitions
Dear Donna replies:
Dear Seeking Career Transitions,
With your HER implementation experience, you can explore various options in the specialty of nursing/healthcare informatics. These might include sales, marketing, training, implementation specialist, design consultant and other positions for any of the companies that design healthcare software. Check out The American Nursing Informatics Association (www.ania.org) and the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (www.himss.org) for more info on
You also might look into clinical documentation improvement specialist. Although this specialty also involves reimbursement and coding issues, it certainly ties in well with your current experience. Check out the Association of Clinical Documentation Improvement Specialists (http://www.hcpro.com/acdis/) to learn more about this specialty.
You don’t mention what your other clinical experience is but there are many others directions you can go depending upon your particular interests, personality, skills and attributes. Read How to find your forte (www.Nurse.com/Cardillo/Forte) to help you determine what path you may want to take.
Start visiting career fairs in your local area. Also attend nursing association meetings, seminars and conventions (you can attend meetings and conventions as a guest if not a member of the organization). See what’s coming up in your area (http://www.nurse.com/events). This is a great way to test the waters and see what else is out there for you to pursue as a next step in your career.
