UC San Diego Medical Center earns NICHE exemplar status

University of California San Diego Medical Center was one of nine hospitals in the nation and the only one in the West region to achieve Exemplar status from Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders in NICHE’s most
recent announcement.

Exemplar is the highest of four levels of recognition given to facilities that show progress of their nurse-driven programs in raising the level of quality in care of older adult patients, according to a news release.

Facilities progress through several levels to achieve the Exemplar designation, which indicates a hospital has demonstrated ongoing high-level dedication to geriatric care and preeminence in the implementation and quality of system-wide interventions and initiatives.

The Exemplar status is assigned following a self-evaluation process, which requires implementation of the NICHE Geriatric Resource Nurse model and evidence-based protocols on all applicable units, including specialty units; implementation of systemic aging-sensitive policies; inclusion of the input of patients, families and community-based providers in planning and implementation of NICHE initiatives; and assumption of regional and national leadership roles.

The evaluation benchmarks yearly program progress, targets future care initiatives and provides data to use in gaining and sustaining support from institution stakeholders.
