Making a difference in the OR

Regarding the February End of Shift article “Rekindling the Spirit: Patient encounter reminds RN why periop nurses matter” (, I have been a nurse for more than 30 years and am still doing floor nursing in a maternity unit. I totally agree with Betty (author Elizabeth Rodrigue-Desnoyers). There are days when I wonder whether I make a difference. Then I become involved with caring for couples who are wonderful people. They inspire you with their love for each other, their support for each other, their strength in difficult situations and their appreciation for all that you do. The patients you think you haven’t had to do much for seem to appreciate you the most.

In the past year, I have been able to come home after a long night and text to my friends and family: I love my job, I love what I do, and I can’t ever imagine doing anything else! I hope I will always be able to say that as long as I am in nursing.

Thank you to Betty for saying it so well.
