More than 600 senior leaders and staff members from the Visiting Nurse Service of New York joined family, friends and supporters at Fashion Institute of Technologys Haft Auditorium in Manhattan in November for presentation of the 2013 Esprit awards.
The awards, VNSNYs highest honor, have been presented annually for more than 20 years and recognize exceptional staff members across all programs, regions and disciplines, according to a VNSNY news release. Candidates are nominated by their co-workers and selected by committees in their departments.
The 2013 awards also were aligned with four culture attributes, which were introduced by President and CEO Mary Ann Christopher, RN, MSN, FAAN. The attributes are Patients and Communities First, We All Lead, One VNSNY, and Joy in Our Work.
Forty-five employees were presented with Esprit awards. Several new winners spoke about their work and its connection to VNSNYs culture attributes. Also recognized were four recipients of a newly created award, the Lillian Wald Distinguished Service Pin, named for the pioneering nurse leader who founded VNSNY in 1893. The pin is awarded to staff members whose service motivated at least three patients or their families to make donations to VNSNY. Two VNSNY nurses who work in acute care clinical management in Manhattan Philip Leon, RN, and Tameka McCabe, RN, BSN, MS received the pin.
The event concluded with remarks from New York State Sen. Jeffrey D. Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester), whose grandmother received home care from VNSNY in her later years. Klein thanked VNSNY staff for helping our citizens live with dignity and presented a proclamation from the New York state legislature declaring Nov. 20, 2013, as Visiting Nurse Service of New York Day. Attendees also enjoyed the music of a brass quintet from the Big Apple Corps Marching Band, featuring VNSNY social worker Sandra Fleming.
