2 Abrazo Health hospitals rank among 50 top cardiovascular hospitals

Two Abrazo Health hospitals, Arrowhead Hospital in Glendale, Ariz., and Phoenix Baptist Hospital/Arizona Heart Hospital, were listed among the nation’s 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals by Truven Health Analytics, according to a news release. Truven Health Analytics is a provider of information and solutions designed to improve the cost and quality of healthcare.

The Truven Health 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals is an annual quantitative study of providers of cardiovascular service. Arrowhead Hospital and Phoenix Baptist Hospital/Arizona Heart Hospital were selected from more than 1,000 hospitals in the U.S. for achieving superior clinical outcomes.

“The leadership shown by our physician teams and employees is proven by the exceptional care given to our communities every day,” Ken Howell, president of Abrazo Health, said in the release. “This great honor is an example of the hard-working, dedicated service the Abrazo medical team is committed to providing throughout our network of hospitals and health care facilities.”

The study, now in its 15th year, evaluates performance in the key areas of risk-adjusted mortality, risk-adjusted complications, core measures that assess process of care, percentage of coronary bypass patients with internal mammary artery use, 30-day mortality rates, 30-day readmission rates, severity-adjusted average length of stay and wage- and severity-adjusted average cost.

According to the release, the 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals spend approximately $2,000 less per bypass surgery case than other hospitals, have significantly better 30-day survival rates, maintain lower 30-day readmission rates for heart attack and heart failure patients and release bypass patients nearly a day sooner than their peers.
