Dear Wants to be a Pediatric Nurse,

Start talking to any pediatric nurses you know or meet. Express your interest in becoming a pediatric nurse when you speak with them. Schedule informational interviews with them. Learn how to get the most from the experience by reading, “The scoop on informational interviewing” (www.Nurse.com/Cardillo/Interviewing). This is a good way to learn more about the specialty and start building professional relationships within it.

Depending on the relationship you have with your supervisor, you also might mention your long-term goal to her/him. Some supervisors will support your goals and help you reach them.

When you can, attend local chapter meetings of the Society of Pediatric Nurses (www.pedsnurses.org). When there’s something you want to do it makes sense to rub elbows with those already doing it. Read “How to change specialties”

I know you’re working and going to school, but if you ever have the opportunity, and the time to do nurse volunteer work with kids, even if just a one-day event, it would also go a long way to show experience and commitment to that segment of the population. Transitioning is a process so start taking steps today to create the future you desire.

Best wishes,
Donna
