NMSU School of Nursing hosts hands on training skills fair

Students at New Mexico State University School of Nursing received hands-on training Jan. 13-15 with the at the first preclinical preparation labs at the College of Health and Social Services building
in Las Cruces.

Nursing students from the Las Cruces and Grants campuses participated in the event, rotating through skills stations that prepared them for clinical experiences in their semester ahead, according to a news release.

Realistic training/simulated scenarios

“These stations include [students] practicing skills on mannequins and participating in simulated scenarios with people pretending to be patients and practitioners,” Laura Vanyo, RN, MSN, school of nursing clinical coordinator. said in the release.

The 280 participating students were preparing to begin their fifth through eighth semesters this spring. They practiced beginning skills, including learning how to take blood pressure and how to calculate correction medication doses as well as more advanced technical skills such as using suction tubes and inserting catheters.

Senior nursing students practiced leadership by coordinating basic skills stations under faculty supervision, according to Vanyo. The labs also included presentations from healthcare experts.

Labs were set up like hospital rooms with simulated electronic patients along with faculty members who volunteered to act as patients.

“We hope that it will help prepare [students] to be better practitioners, safer practitioners and also learn how to do some of the skills and work as a team,” Vanyo said. “Certainly teamwork, communication and patient safety are the most important things that I hope to accomplish.”
